What a good quote looks like. And what to walk away from.
Good signs
- Platform choice (Caseta / RA3 / Control4) matched to budget and scope
- Lutron-certified pro for RA3+, dealer-certified for Control4
- Scene programming included in the quote, not billed separately
- Future-expansion headroom built into the system
- Written warranty on programming labor
- Existing dimmer / switch compatibility audit done upfront
Walk-away signs
- Pushes Control4 for a 5-room install (massive overkill)
- RA3 install by a non-certified electrician
- ‘Programming is extra’
- System sized exactly to today. Can’t add a single room
- Programming labor not warrantied
- No compatibility audit. Guaranteed flicker issues

How much does smart lighting installation cost?
Single-room Caseta starter $500–$1,500. Whole-floor smart $1,800–$5,000. Whole-home Caseta $4,000–$10,000. Lutron RA3 whole-home $8,000–$25,000. Control4 / Crestron estate systems reach $60,000+. Platform choice is the biggest single cost driver.
Should I choose Caseta, RA3, or Control4?
Caseta for homeowner-managed up to ~15 rooms. RA3 for whole-home with motorized shades and audio integration ($8K–25K). Control4 / Crestron for estate-scale where lighting is part of a fully-integrated home system. Picking up means more capability; picking down saves serious money.
Can I install Caseta myself or do I need a pro?
Caseta is genuinely homeowner-installable. It’s wireless retrofit dimmers that swap in like normal dimmers. For larger Caseta installs (10+ rooms) or any scene-keypad programming, a pro saves frustration and ensures consistent commissioning.
Why does RA3 cost so much more than Caseta?
RA3 is a wired backbone system (vs Caseta’s wireless), supports motorized shades and audio integration, scales to 200+ devices, and requires Lutron-certified programming. The certification matters. Uncertified installs of RA3 typically have programming issues that take months to surface.
What are scene keypads and do I need them?
Scene keypads are wall-mounted multi-button controllers that activate pre-programmed lighting scenes (‘Movie,’ ‘Dinner,’ ‘Sleep’). Each runs $250–400. Worth it at every primary entry, the master bedroom, and the kitchen. Not worth it in guest rooms or storage areas.
Can I integrate motorized shades and audio at the same time?
Yes. RA3 and Control4 are designed for it. Caseta supports shades and basic audio integration. The single biggest factor in a good integrated system is doing the wiring during the lighting install, not retrofitting later. Even on wireless systems, the planning matters.
