Six factors that move every recessed lighting installation quote.
01
Whether wiring already exists (retrofit) or needs to be run (new construction or remodel)
02
Ceiling type (drywall vs plaster vs high ceilings. Plaster doubles labor)
03
Insulation contact rating (IC-rated housings cost more)
04
Dimmer compatibility. Adding dimmers adds $30–80 per switch
05
Local permit requirements (some cities require electrical permit for any new circuit)
Pricing shifts with labor rates and local code.

How much does recessed lighting cost per fixture?
A single installed LED recessed light runs $150–$300 in retrofit, $250–$500 in new install. Whole-room jobs ($700–$1,800 for 4–6 fixtures) get better per-fixture pricing thanks to mobilization efficiencies. Whole-home retrofits run $5,000–$12,000.
Does plaster ceiling really cost almost 2× drywall?
Yes. Plaster cutting is slower, dust containment is harder, and any cracking around the cut requires patch work. Honest installers price plaster 60–100% higher than drywall. If a quote prices them the same, expect surprises at invoice time.
Are LED-compatible dimmers really necessary?
Yes. Standard halogen dimmers cause flicker, buzz, and premature LED failure. LED-compatible dimmers (Lutron Caseta, Maestro CL) cost $30–60 per switch and are non-negotiable. Some quotes leave them off. Always ask.
What color temperature should I choose?
2700K for bedrooms (warm, candle-like), 3000K for living areas (warm but clean), 3500K for kitchens (slightly cooler for task), 4000K avoided in most homes (office-like). The best installs spec different temperatures per room.
Do I need a permit for recessed lighting?
Like-for-like LED retrofit of existing housings usually doesn’t require a permit. New circuits, new fixture locations, or any high-voltage work typically does. Your installer should pull the permit as part of the quote.
How long does a recessed install take?
A 12-fixture retrofit in a single room is typically a single day. Whole-floor new installs (20+ fixtures) run 2–3 days. Plaster ceilings always take longer than drywall.
